On 22 May 1808, a meteorite shower fell at and around the market - town of Stonařov (Stannern) near Jihlava. A commission consisting of K. v. Schreibers and A. v. Widmannstätten was set up in Vienna and sent to investigace the event. They found 61 meteorites weighing a total about 15 kg. The heaviest meteorite weighing about 6.33 kg was found only later. The experts who studied the meteorites at that time soon found that they differed significantly from other hitherto known meteorites in that they contained no iron or nickel. In 1810, M. H. Klaproth compared them to basalt, and G. Rose (1863) coined the name of eucrites for that group of meteorites. Today, Stannern stony meteorites are cartegorized as HED achondrites. They are made extraterrestrial basalts that probably originated from the 4 Vesta asteroid.
