The results of faunistic investigations of the small terrestrial mammals, in the area of southwestern Moravia in 1993–1997, are reported in the present paper. Totally, 2306 individuals of 16 species mammals were captured in 40 localities within 35 quadrats of the standard grid maps of the KFME system. The occurrence of Sorex araneus and Sorex minutus was recorded in 34 quadrats (97.14%), Neomys fodiens in 33 quadrats (94.28%), and Neomys anomalus with Clethrionomys glareolus in 32 quadrats (91.43%). Microtus agrestis was captured in 24 quadrats (68.57%), Apodemus sylvaticus in 23 quadrats (65.71%), Microtus arvalis in 22 (62.86%), Micromys minutus in 19 (54.28%), Talpa europaea and Microtus subterraneus in 16 (45.71%), Arvicola terrestris in 14 (40%), Apodemus flavicollis in 13 (37.14%), Crocidura leucodon in 3 (8.57%) and Crocidura suaveolens and Mustela nivalis in 2 quadrats (5.71%). The captured individuals belonged to S. araneus (560 individuals; D=24.28%), N. fodiens (352; 15.26%), S. minutus (303; 13.14%), C. glareolus (301; 13.05%), N. anomalus (252; 10.93%), M. arvalis (204; 8.85%), M. agrestis (81; 3.51%), A. sylvaticus (55; 2.38%), M. subterraneus (54; 2.34%), M. minutus (41; 1.78%), T. europaea (35; 1.52%), A. flavicollis (24; 1.04%), A. terrestris (23; 1%), Apodemus sp. (12; 0.52%), C. leucodon (5; 0.22%), C. suaveolens (2; 0.09%) and Mustela nivalis (2; 0.09%). The occurrence of common species was confirmed in many quadrats, and above all, it indiented probably continuous distribution of N. anomalus (91.4%). This species occurs in all the areas of southwestern and south Bohemia. On the contrary, the number of findings of M. agrestis decreases in the east direction, and the species is presumably missing in some investigated quadrats of the Brno-venkov and Znojmo districts. The question of the valuable findings of C. leucodon is discussed in details in a separate paper (Hanák et al. 1998).
