The article emphasises the exceptional importance of Šafárik’s Slovanské starožitnosti [Slavic Antiquities] from 1837 as one of the most remarkable Slavic works of the 19th century. It provides an overview of its first translations (into Russian, German, Polish and other languages) and draws attention to reactions to the Slavic Antiquities. The latest translations include the Slovak translation (the first part was published in 1999 and the second in 2009). The language of the Slavic Antiquities is extremely complicated. It is a unique and original language, representing a distinctive professional style, a certain construct of grammar, of the Czech language of the period archaised in terms of word formation and vocabulary, recorded using the orthography used then. In addition, it is greatly influenced by the complex Latin and German syntax. The translation into Slovak had to cope with these issues. The article indicates on specific examples individual problems (in the areas of orthography, word formation, vocabulary, word order etc.) which the translators had to deal with.
