This article provides an insight into the history of the museum practice in Czechoslovakia in the early years of state socialism. After an introductory section, it describes the establishment and selected chapters from the early days of the first communist party museum in Slovakia, the V. I. Lenin Museum in Bratislava, between 1954 and 1957. First, it describes the important figures involved and the process of establishing the institution until its opening on 20 January 1954. The next section is devoted to the art competition for the decoration of the Museum, which took place as the second stage of construction, concurrently with the opening process, from the end of 1953 to mid-1954. The description ends in 1957, when, after years of uncertainty, the Museum was taken over by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia, which had run it until its demise on 1 December 1990.
