This article focuses on a little-known set of 19th century historical paintings from the collection of the Department of Early Czech History at the National Museum. Although the collection is small (a total of 12 paintings, one of which dates from the 18th century) and uneven in quality (alongside works by leading artists, it also includes works of only average quality), it clearly shows the Czech public’s interest in themes from Czech history, from its mythical beginnings (the scene of the Knights of Blaník) up to the beginning of the 17th century. The article shows the popularity of historical themes in painting, which was understood as arguments in the gradually developing effort to create a modern Czech nation. However, especially in the first half of the 19th century, interest in Czech history was also shown by Czech German society.
