Trends and Challenges in Museum Installation of Textile Collections
Textile artefacts form a substantial part of museum collections, ranging from garments and accessories to liturgical textiles, large-scale flat objects, and archaeological finds. Their installation is complex and requires tailored approaches. Garments are often mounted on custom-made mannequins designed to reflect historical silhouettes, a practice increasingly standardized across museums. This paper also explores the use of magnets as a non-invasive display method for textiles. As digitisation becomes integral to museum operations, the study highlights methods such as 3D scanning and the creation of digital models. These not only enrich exhibitions but also enable detailed documentation and further research without handling fragile objects. Digitised data support the development of haptic and educational models and facilitate access to collections during institutional closures, such as those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper presents specific installation and digitisation techniques used at the National Museum in Prague, supplemented by examples from other institutions. It also reflects on the pressing need for sustainable exhibition practices in response to environmental concerns.
