Museum presentation of human remains

The issue of the presentation of human remains in museums has been the subject of expert discussions in recent decades, especially in connection with ethical, legal and cultural aspects. The paper analyses the influence of the historical background on current approaches to the exhibition of human specimens, while reflecting global trends in repatriation and protection of sensitive collections. It examines the influence of the colonial past, orientalism and scientific paradigms on the perception of human remains, as well as media coverage in their controversial processing. Special attention is paid to the concepts of trauma and ethics in the presentation of human remains, while differences in approach between professional collections are analysed. In conclusion, based on case studies and current discussions, the author proposes a possible direction for museum practice that considers interdisciplinary approaches and respects the cultural, scientific and ethical aspects of securing human remains.
