The National Film Archive: A Memory Institution Between Collection Creation and Selection of Archival Materials
The study aims to situate and subsequently critically analyze Národní filmový archiv, Prague (NFA) and its collection practice in the domestic and international context. It starts by briefly introducing the historical development of the institution and its predecessors, with an emphasis on their institutional anchorage. It presents a summary of the NFA’s current acquisition practice and, following this, discusses NFA’s position as a specialized archive, or archive in general. As a more appropriate frame of reference, it proposes the community of film heritage institutions, which it briefly characterizes with regard to their institutional background. Finally, it discusses the concept and broader notion of “memory institutions“ – which could be productive in overcoming the partial professional and departmental differences between archives, libraries and museums, or institutions methodologically managed by different ministries.
