With the advent of electronic processing of museum collections, museums have primarily focused on addressing issues related to appropriate hardware and software. However, due to the varied approaches to building museum collections, it is often overlooked that the digitization of registration and catalog records should not result solely in data repositories devoid of their information potential. This paper examines the terminology of material culture elements in museums within the context of cultural heritage digitization. It operates on the premise that codifying museum terminology for material culture elements, through a systematic structure, can establish a foundation for organizing knowledge and for processing, creating, and utilizing information resources – key functions of museum collections. The paper explores the challenge of museum terminologization and conceptualization, using the knife as an example of a material culture element. Here, terminologization refers to the process of modifying the ordinary meaning of words to precisely define the terms, integrating them into the terminological system of a specific discipline – in this case, applied museology. It addresses the essential prerequisites and criteria for successfully constructing the terminological framework of the field.
