For several decades, the composite book AZ 38 / AK XII 17 was located in the holdings of the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. The composite book contained the discant parts from sixteen printed éditions of German provenience, and it is one of the largest books of its kind containing vocal polyphony kept in the Czech Republic. It contains 401 compositions (147 motets, 82 Italian canzonas, and German and a few French polyphonie songs). The represented composers were ail active in central Europe in the 1570s: Orlando di Lasso, Ivo de Vento, Alexander Utendal, Jacob Regnart, Johann Knöfel, Johannes Eccard, Ludwig Helmbold, Johann Steurlein, and Antonio Scandello. The study characterizes the individual printed editions and deals with the artistic preferences of the person who compiled the composite book, who was probably a Professional musician. Since restitution, the partbook has been back in the keeping of its owner, the Library of the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov.
