The distribution range of the striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771), consists of two isolated regions including parts of the Palaearctic and Oriental regions. The western boundary of its range stretches through central Europe approximately in the curvature from southern Denmark through central Germany, Bohemia and Moravia, northern and central Slovakia and Hungary, reaching northern Italy. This border is greatly dynamical and in general is characterized by expansion of the range towards west. In Slovakia, the striped field mouse inhabits the eastern and central parts of the country. In 2010, its occurrence was registered also in southwestern Slovakia on seven localities of the Danube lowland. Ten females and 16 males were caught in wet meadow habitats, on the forest margin or in the contact zone of continuous reeds and farmland. In Slovakia the nearest known localities of presence of this species are found in the Ipeľská kotlina basin and Krupinská planina plateau, in the north and northeast in the middle part of the Váh basin and upper part of the Hron basin, in the Czech Republic in southeastern Moravia around Hodonín, and in Hungary in the Szigetköz area near the Lipót village. Considering the geographical distance and possible ways of spreading we assume that the individuals in the Danube lowland come from northwestern Hungary, or these Hungarian populations expanded into this region. A prognosis of long-term survival of populations in our new noticed localities is unclear, because in the regions of expansion, individuals of the striped field mouse can be found in a certain period and then disappear under the pressure of trophic competitors or unfavourable topical conditions. This dynamic pulsation of natural range of the species was described from southern Moravia, eastern Slovakia and northwestern Hungary.
