Jaroslav Šulc (21 October 1903 – 20 May 1943) was a promising young Czech palaeontologist. While still at school, he visited the palaeontological collections of the National Museum, where he donated many fossils and helped sort and identify fossil collections free of charge. He worked with leading palaeontologists and amateur collectors such as Jan Koliha, Jaroslav Perner, Celda Klouček and others. After defending his doctoral thesis, he worked for several years as an assistant at the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology at Charles University in Prague and later as a private researcher. During his short professional life, in which he focused mainly on foraminifers, otoliths and other small fauna of the Mesozoic and Tertiary, he established cooperation with a number of foreign colleagues. Shortly after the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, he became involved in resistance activities within the Defence of the Nation organisation. He was arrested in 1940 and, after three years’ imprisonment, was executed in Berlin Plötzensee on 20 May 1943.
