The paper deals with the development of the Sokol Physical Education Association in Mělník between 1905 and 1914, a period of intense social changes preceding the outbreak of the largest war the world had ever seen. For the Mělník Sokol Association, this was a period of frequent crises, but also of growth in membership after the opening of its own Sokol gymnasium. This was followed by a turning point symptomatic of the period under study characterised by great changes in society. In addition to a generational change in membership, this mainly involved the establishment of a women’s section in Mělník’s Sokol in 1906. The paper also analyses the organisational background and social impact of the association both in the city and its surrounding area. Attention is also paid to cultural events, including the Sokol’s characteristic Shrovetide carnivals, grape harvest festivities, and other events promoting national character. The newly built Sokol gym offered a wide range of uses, from exercise to university extension courses to film screenings. The analysis of the local Sokol unit as an important cultural and national-educational driving force in Mělník and its surroundings is based primarily on the collection of the Mělník’s Sokol Physical Education Association stored in the State District Archive Mělník and research of local periodicals of the time. The paper helps to understand the turbulent social change of the time in the local environment of Mělník in the very early 20th century. Among other things, it examines the manifestations and malleability of the nation-building character of this association on the border with the German ethnic group on the eve of World War I.
