In 2023 and 2024, the Museum of Prague acquired a set of postcards and drawings created by Stanislav Kafka (7 August 1891–4 April 1942) and sent to his friend Miloš Hlaváček to the battlefield of World War I. Gradually, the forgotten story of their creator was uncovered. Stanislav Kafka was an active member of the Prague Sokol since 1909 and member of the wider management of the Sokol movement in the period after 1918, where he was active primarily as a fencing official. Kafka was a talented amateur cartoonist and illustrated several manuals for instructors at Sokol. In October 1941, he was arrested along with other Sokol officials, imprisoned in Terezín and in March 1942 deported to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp, where he was killed on 4 April 1942. The set of 66 postcards and 25 loose drawings is one of three collections documenting his activities (one set of drawings, secret notes and biographical material is kept in the Terezín Memorial; another one in the National Museum). This set bears witness to everyday life during World War I and to the personality of its author.
