Archaeology is the study of past human societies primarily from preserved material sources, or fragments of the original material culture. In this field, despite the application of exact methods, do social constructs of past societies arise unconsciously and on the basis of social patterns of contemporary society? To what extent are interpretations made on the basis of repeatedly used stereotypes? Modern natural science analyses, such as aDNA, bring new data and new interpretations. The reflection coming with them prompts the aforementioned questions. In the context of this reflection, this paper focuses on the degree of unconscious or automatic projection of some contemporary social norms of the Western world in the interpretation and reconstruction of gender and social roles of women and men in prehistory and their visual presentation to the public.
