The study focuses on the output of Brno printing houses at the turn of the nineteenth century and its impact on the development of the book market, literacy, and cultural life. During this period, several prominent printing houses operated in Brno, notably those of Josef Georg Trassler, Johann Georg Gastl, and Jan Silvester and Karel František Siedler. Their publishing programmes reflected Enlightenment ideals, responded to the growing demand for reading across social strata, and helped shape readers’ tastes. The output included scholarly and fictional literature, textbooks, chapbooks, periodicals, and official documents. A significant portion consisted of reprints of foreign works, which made contemporary knowledge accessible to both educated and popular audiences. Brno printers made effective use of advertising and developed extensive distribution networks, ensuring that their publications reached well beyond the regional context. The study highlights not only the economic contribution of these enterprises but also their role in the cultural and intellectual development of the burghers and nobility.
