The paper deals with the representations of Josef Jungmann in German-language periodicals published in the Czech lands between the philologist’s death and the unveiling of his monument in Prague. The selected periodicals represent diverse political positions. They include i.a. the official Prager Zeitung, Rudolf Glaser’s patriotic magazine Ost und West, the conservative–liberal Bohemia, David Kuh’s liberal but more explicitly nationalistic Tagesbote aus Böhmen, as well as Politik, a German-language journal published by the Czech National Party. The paper examines the changes in the meanings associated with Jungmann depending on the nationalisation of society, the intensifying Czech-German national conflict, and the formation of the political press in the 1860s.
