A Single Find of a Coin of Ptolemy XII from Brno-Řečkovice (Brno-město Distr.)

In 1960, a single Ptolemaic coin was discovered in Brno-Řečkovice on a field that has since been built over, near the present-day Brno-Řečkovice Grammar School. The coin was purchased from the finder and is currently stored in the numismatic collection of the Moravian Museum, Brno. At that time, the find raised the question of whether it might be a secondary find; such a hypothesis, however, seems less likely today. The coin is a stater (tetradrachm) of Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos, struck in 53/52 BC in the mint of Alexandria. The aim of this paper is to discuss this unusual find, which chronologically belongs to the end of the La Tène period, in the context of Greek, and especially Ptolemaic coins discovered in Central Europe. Within this region, it represents the latest Ptolemaic coin find known to date.
