Food containers represent a specific class of Old Kingdom stone vessel production that has so far only been attested in a limited number of tombs. A small number of previously unpublished fragments have recently been identified amongst the remains of the burial equipment of Queen Khentkaus II, who was buried in the pyramid field at Abusir. Most of these newly identified fragments are currently housed at the Náprstek Museum in Prague, whilst three are kept in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The Prague material was examined, documented, and compared with similar archaeological evidence. The analysis considers not only two-part stone containers intended to hold actual food offerings, but also their imitations – solid stone objects of identical shape lacking an internal cavity. This study therefore aims to address the broader context of stone vessel production associated with food offerings deposited in Old Kingdom burial chambers.
