The preservation of volumes in danger of acid-paper degradation is the principal criterion for selecting documents for digitisation at the National Library of the Czech Republic. The most affected group comprises periodicals printed on low-quality paper, which are often severely damaged and cannot be made available to users in the study rooms due to the risk of early decay. Protective reformatting is the only viable method of preserving and presenting at least their content. A typical example is the sports-focused German-language periodical Allgemeines Sport-Blatt: Illustrierte Wochenschrift für alle Sportzweige, published in Liberec in 1919–1938, which was selected in 2024 for reformatting on the internal digitisation line based on preservation criteria. The National Library of the Czech Republic probably holds the most complete extant collection of this title. The article outlines the procedures of its protective digitisation — from the initial assessment of its physical condition to its publication in the digital library — and highlights the research potential of the digitised edition.
