In the 20th century, the media have undergone essential changes in several areas. The social, political and cultural roles of the media have strengthened. Media have become an important leisure time institution. Since WWI, media have been advanced as instruments of propaganda. Great technological progress has changed the media. In the beginning of the 20th century, media meant mostly press with some pictures. In the course of the century, visual and audial forms have conquered the media production. The speed of transmitting information has increased highly. All the foregoing changes are significant, but the most significant is the fact that media have become part and parcel of economic development. It started with the so-called Northcliffe Revolution at the turn of the 20th century which signaled the shift to commercial, advertising-based media. Media magnates have played an important role in the commercialization process and they were joined by rapid commercialization of the new, „network“ media.
