The study provides a comparison of two exponents of Czech scientists in the period of the Czech National Revival – Pavel Josef Šafařík (1795–1861) and Václav Hanka (1791–1861). The relation between these scholars and Slavists was studied and analysed by means of random probes in Šafařík’s correspondence with Hanka, J. Kollár and F. Palacký. Attention was focused on the reception of Herder’s chapter on the historical role of Slavs by Šafařík and on bibliographically as-yet-unknown Hanka’s translation of this German philosopher’s text used as an introduction to Krátká Historie Slowanských Národů starých časů [A Brief History of the Slavic Peoples in the Old Days (1818)], which was a Czech extract from F. C. Rühs’ Handbuch der Geschichte des Mittelalters (1816). Although the mutual relations between these generational contemporaries cooled in the 1830s, they never became evident enemies. P. J. Šafařík thought highly of V. Hanka as an important figure who found great acceptance in Czech literature despite the fact that he knew Hanka’s bad character traits.
