This paper analyses the early works of the poet and scholar P. J. Šafárik (1795–1861) and the Polish Romantic poet and thinker Adam Mickiewicz (1798–1856). Despite the fact that their lives and literary works were different, both authors have significantly contributed to European thought by adding a Slavic dimension to it – Šafárik as a renowned scholar, historian and a philologist and Mickiewicz as a Romantic poet, mystic and ideologist. They never met, but they had known each other through their texts for almost thirty years. Our comparative analyses have shown that especially the early works of both authors (poetry and literary and aesthetic views) are similar in their creativity stemming from the eternal conflict between an individual talent and social norms, between intuition and reason and, in a broader context, between Classicism and Romanticism.
