By comparing the known published sources and archival materials we have successfully reconstructed the process of the establishing of the Tachov Museum in the period following the 2ndWorld War. We can accurately identify the date of the 26th February 1954, the date on which the District People’s Committee Council (called the “rada ONV”) decided to establish the museum at its meeting, as its foundation day. After the expulsion process leading to the evacuation of the German population from Tachov, the remaining question was how to save and protect the valuable historical and artistic artefacts that had been abandoned in the border area. One problem was the inability to find the right competent person, particularly because the region was still not fully repopulated. Finally there were three other main issues – the absence of any control or management and the uncompleted reconstruction of the museum building – which led to very serious consequences, including the destruction of many collection items and the irretrievable loss of information about the origins of almost all the objects that had been collected by the museum between the years 1954 and 1959. Some of the most serious damage could not be fully repaired, though the subsequent period (since 1959) under the direction of Miroslava Halová can be evaluated as a period filled with impressive work at the museum and its successful development.
