The new Museum Building with its permanent exhibition opened in Žďár nad Sázavou in 2013. The basic concept of the exhibition was dependent on the physical space of this renovated historic building. Four rooms were prepared for the exhibition. The first of these displays a visual synopsis of Žďár’s history between the 13th Century and the first half of the 20th Century. In the second room there is a reconstruction of a shop from the first half of the 20th Century and mementos of traditional crafts. The third room is arranged to resemble the drawing room of a burgher’s home during the last days of the monarchy. The final exhibition room is a museum playroom. In this room visitors can try-on historical costumes and items of knight’s armour. There is also a large board bearing 45 photographs of persons important to the town’s history; (they are identified only by numbers; their names are in the accompanying texts so that visitors can try to guess, who is who). On one wall historical photos are projected and there are also many texts and iconographic sources in computer databases with two touchscreens. The creators of the permanent exhibition of Žďár nad Sázavou’s town history received their inspiration from all over Europe (e.g. a photo board – Epping Forest District Museum, Waltham Abbey, UK, for using aromas – Maihaugen, Lillehammer, Norway, for a minimum of captions – Museum Halstatt, Austria) and from the Czech Republic too (e.g. an interactive version of the Museum at Benátky nad Jizerou).
