During his short life, Karel Holub, together with his father Karel Holub Sr. (a tannery worker), assembled an extensive collection of fossils from the Bohemian Lower and Middle Ordovician. Due to his poor living conditions, he was unable to study palaeontology and instead became a teacher in rural small schools. Despite this, he continued to his activities in palaeontology and collaborated with leading experts of his time such as Jaroslav Perner, Celda Klouček and others. Karel Holub died shortly after the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic on 14 November 1918 in Světlá pod Ještědem, where he is also buried. In his will, he bequeathed his and his father´s collection to the newly established museum in Rokycany.
