In 1872, the Museum of the Kingdom of Bohemia (today the National Museum) acquired the private mineral collection of Josef Hieronymus Zeidler, abbot of the monastery in Prague at Strahov. The collection is referred to as private because there were two mineralogical collections in the Premonstratensian monastery in Prague at Strahov – the older monastic collection and the private Zeidler collection. Today in the mineralogical collection of the National Museum, 1214 specimens of minerals from Zeidler’s collection can be identified with certainty and another 87 items that are very likely from Zeidler. A total of 63 samples from Zeidler’s collection are displayed in a permanent mineralogical exhibition. These are among the best that the mineralogical collection of the National Museum preserves.
