Documents produced in running the National Museum are vital in investigating its history. But they do give a picture of only one side to its existence, if a fundamental one. In order to investigate ‘behind the scenes’ at the institution, it is particularly useful to look at the private documents of the players involved in different events. The diaries of Josef Volf provide this opportunity for the history of the Museum between 1904 – 1937, as the head of the museum library. He wrote a private diary which has been preserved and which contains often very personal testimony not only of his private life, but also events in the institution with which he was involved for most of his life. The study gives a biography of Josef Volf, and also contains a detailed description of his diaries and selected edited sections therein regarding various tranches of the author’s life.
