František L. Rieger (1818–1903) was one of the leading representatives of the burgher class. He was socially engaged in many directions, but especially in politics. His counterpart, Jan Nepomuk Harrach (1828–1909), was a prominent figure of Czech aristocratic society and one of the foremost aristocrats of the monarchy. He was one of the few with strong Czech feelings. Like Rieger, also he was engaged in many areas – in economy, culture (his activities for the National Museum and the National Theatre are likewise non-negligible) and politics. In this area, he was less innovative than Rieger, but very extremely persistent. His excellent management of the extensive family property made it possible for him to become an important benefactor as well (he donated the largest sums to the large Czech minority in Vienna). The two men gradually became friends and Harrach significantly crossed the boundaries of his estate. The correspondence reflects their common interests, mutual cooperation and true friendship.
