Mass media and mass communication played a key role in the process of transformation of respected societies towards modern, industrial nations. One of the fundamental dimensions of this process was how were the members of modernizing societies developing an identity - an internalized relation towards the ,,new" situation of the nation as an cultural and political entity. According to some authors, media (newspapers) played an important role in the whole process and offered (with literature, history and school, etc.) national myths, values and narratives on which such a "national identity" could have been built. In the process of cultural and language emancipation of modern nations, media became part of the national identity, however the same media participated on political differentiation of the society. In the structural development towards consume-based societies, media remained the factor of national and civic identification symbolically but redefined their role themselves economically and politically.
