The villa of the mining entrepreneur Vladimír Vondráček once stood in Moravská Ostrava. Existing literature does not agree on whether the famous Prague architect Josef Schulz was involved in its design. This study examines this question by studying archival documents (plans, letters, construction documentation, maps) and contemporary periodicals. Based on these sources, it confirms Schulz’s involvement in the reconstruction of the villa’s interior and the new construction of the stable. The text highlights the limitations in our understanding, not only of this architect’s work but also of 19th-century architecture on the periphery in general. Alongside insights into the life of the client, this study situates the villa within the broader social context and the building culture of Ostrava in the 1870s and 1880s. By analysing Schulz’s proposed plans, the study assesses the quality of architectural modifications to the villa and examines the architect’s approach to solving the assigned task based on various working sketches.
