Josef Václav Sládek was a very important personality of the post-revolutionary years 1848–49. He was not only a successful poet and a journalist, but also an excellent translator from English to Czech language, a photographer, an assistant at the National Museum and on his journey through America he tried several workers’ professions. Most of his estates were donated to the Museum in Zbiroh or to the Museum of Czech Literature, but some objects are part of the collections of the National Museum as well. One of them is the wedding Czamara from the marriage to his first wife Emilie Nedvídková in 1873, which was bought from Pavel Vyskočil (relative of J. V. Sládek) in 1958. Czamara has black colour with a characteristic cord fastening. The cutting pattern corresponds to the period of wedding – i.e. the second half of the 19th century. The textile-technological survey was intended to document the parts of the garment in detail, to identify its material composition, the type of fabrics used, etc. The article briefly summarizes the significant events of Josef Václav Sládek’s life, then it discusses the phenomenon of the national garment and the importance of Czamara in that period. The information can be used as a source for further research in this topic, or as a basic material for the reconstruction of the national clothing of the second half of the 19th century. Last but not least, with detailed documentation, we do not need to work with the original object, so it is possible to reduce manipulation with fragile historical material.
