The paper presents the results of qualitative research examining Czech museum exhibitions and their educative aspects. It introduces museum exhibition as a specific teaching medium and as an environment in which visitors can spontaneously learn something new or take part in a directed educative process. The paper also outlines the characteristics of exhibitions which are perceived as successful teaching media. Such exhibitions employ contextual, narrative or functionally- ecological ways of imparting knowledge, the principle of example and other educational principles or ways in which didactic exhibits and other elements can be used. The educational benefit for visitors learning and the overall effectiveness of exhibitions can be enhanced significantly by using materials on the museum’s web pages, which didactically reduce the knowledge connected to the museum collections and broaden the impact of the museum. The efforts spent on improving the ways in which exhibitions are applied in learning can be hampered in museums by various obstacles such as extensively format- based and non-contextual approaches to exhibitions, insufficient support of the concept of museum as a space for education on the part of the museum management or curators, the lack of qualified museum educators, insufficient space for educational activities, etc. The identification of these obstacles constitutes another outcome of the research presented in this paper.
