During the period 1919–1943, five brown bears (Ursus arctos) and two Himalayan bears (Ursus thibetanus) were kept in the Prague castle ditch. They originated mainly from gifts of the Czechoslovak Legion to T. G. Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. In the collection of the National Museum in Prague, the following material is preserved: (i) two skins and one pelvis bone of Himalayan bears, both animals (females) were trapped near the Mu-lin-che river on the Russian border with China and belonged to the subspecies U. t. ussuricus; (ii) skin of a male brown bear originating from Subcarpathian Ruthenia (now Transcarpathian Ukraine) belonging to the nominotypical subspecies U. a. arctos; (iii) skin and entire skeleton of a male brown bear supposingly originating from the area of Vladivostok or Khabarovsk; according to osteometric data on the skull, it was identified as U. a. beringianus.
