This paper gives a chronological overview of the photographic and written documentation in historic collections which are acquired in the National Library of the CR for restoration, conservation and protection of rare book collections. Basic differences in the documentation of historic book collections are recorded, from reformatting and access to the modern collection. Emphasis is placed on capturing different types of restoration documentation, in terms of development, ethical approach and systematic records. The basic criteria for restoration documentation, conservation surveys, specifics and peculiarities discovered during the surveys of collections in the National Library are described. A large part is dedicated to Baroque spine finishings and scanning metal elements of bindings. On the basis of a comparison of quality documentation and analysis of historical sources, the period in which there was a systematic removal of metalworking and clips from the Clementinum’s collections was completely respecified and more precisely determined. This finding is an interesting basis for further book research. Documentation from the National Library’s Archive forms a separate group, with photographic shots capturing the method of presentation and development of an ethical approach to the protection of the book collection. In conclusion, a number of cases of retrospective use of documentation on the physical condition of specimens from various time periods are described. As well as monitoring the remaining colour layers, an example is given comparing the condition of the Codex Vyssegradensis textile cover using a printed facsimile, and the problem of testing the effectiveness of formerly applied methods for deacidifying paper and conserving collagen materials are characterised.
