Journalistic association is understood as one of the constitutional features of journalism as a profession. The development of Czech journalistic organizations from 1880s till the beginning of 21st century can be divided into clearly distinguished periods. The contribution examines the beginnings of Czech journalistic organizations. First attempts to set up a journalisti organization can be tracked down in the 1870s. The development of Czech journalists’ association(s) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries reveals the social differentiation of journalists in the Czech society. The rise of the profession (as well as of media themselves) was strongly influenced by the political context ofAustrian (and Austro–Hungarian) monarchy with its strong control of the press. Czech journalism of late 19th century was differentiated according to the blue collar/white collar status. The first journalistic association was established in 1877 and it was a relatively close (“club–like”) union, which focused only on the support of its members. The membership was restricted by the statutes. In late 1800s and early 1900s, alternative organizations associating journalists from regional and local press were established. This “guilt-like” initial phase led to establishing a unified union of journalists in 1926 within the independent Czechoslovakia.
