Under the normalisation period, television series became an important part of Czechoslovak television propaganda. Like other media, television production was also involved in constructing the socialist reality. The ruling regime used television series to present clearly defined norms, values and sanctions of the socialist society. The viewer was supposed to get an idea of a particular behaviour pattern. The leading characters of the series were meant to set an example of the way citizens should behave in order to contribute to the functioning of the society. This kind of prescriptive character frequently appeared in the series of the screenwriter Jaroslav Dietl whose works were extremely popular with the viewers despite their propaganda nature. The Czechoslovak television and its series about contemporaty life made every effort to depict a wide spectrum of professions and settings of socialist Czechoslovakia.
