The author describes the occurrence of the harvest mouse (Micromys minutus) and hazel dormouse (Muscardinnus avellanarius) in eastern Slovakia based on the survey of summer nests in field and woodland margins. In the years 2010–2012, a total of 230 (M. minutus) and 148 (M. avellanarius) nests were observed on the branches of shrubs and herb vegetation (Prunus spinosa, Rubus fruticosus, Cornus sanguinea, Solidago gigantea, Humulus lupulus, Tanacetum vulgare, Urtica dioia and Phalaris arundinacea). The total altitudinal distribution of localities extends from 203 to 490 m a. s. l., with most of the records made in the category 200–300 m a. s. l. (88.7% for M. minutus and 85.1% for M. avellanarius), followed by 300–400 m a. s. l. (11.3% of M. minutus and 12.2% of M. avellanarius) and 400–500 m a. s. l. (0% for M. minutus and 2.7% for M. avellanarius). The occurrence of four nests types of M. avellanarius with a significant dominance of mixed type nests (76.4%) was confirmed. Botanical analysis of leaf material in the nests confirmed presence of nine different plant species with the following dominance: Rubus fruticosus (46.2%), Carpinus betulus (33.3%), Populus tremula (7.1%), Quercus petraea (7.1%); Fagus sylvatica (1.9%), Prunus spinosa (2.6%), Acer campestre (0.6%), Sambucus nigra (0.6%) and Humulus lupulus (0.6%). A high prevalence of only one type of leaves in the nests was also recorded (87.7%), while only 12.3% of the nests contained more than one type of leaves of the above mentioned trees and shrubs. The obtained data help to increase knowledge on the distribution and ecology of the two species in the region of eastern Slovakia.
