The polemic between Erasmus, López de Zúñiga and Sepúlveda originated, probably, in the defence of the edition of the Polyglot Bible in Alcalá. Later it degenerated in accusations against Erasmus of promoting Lutheranism. However, the Complutensian Polyglot shows two very different attitudes related to the Old and the New Testament. The edition of the NT-before Erasmus’ editionsaccepts without criticism Jerome’s Latin version. On the contrary, the edition of the AT, posterior to Erasmus Novum Instrumentum, shows a more open attitude, presenting together with the traditional Latin version an interlinear new Latin translation that is quite different from the text of the Vulgata. This was probably the result of different tendencies in the Complutensian group. At the beginning Zúñiga seems to defend the first editorial decision in the edition of the NT.
