Emil Axman in the Service of the National Museum
The musicologist and composer Emil Axman (1887–1949) was one of the most important figures in the history of the music collection at the National Museum. Emil Axman was hired in 1913 by the National Museum to serve in an auxiliary position in the library, but from the beginning he was entrusted with tasks requiring expertise including the administration and cataloguing of the sheet music collection. In 1915, he was hired to the permanent position of librarian. In 1946 Axman succeeded at getting an independent music department established, and he became its first director. He is the probable author of the music department’s collecting policy, published in 1948. Axman bore the lion’s share of responsibility for the amassing of the extensive sheet music archive at the National Museum from the second decade of the 20th century and for the development of a broadly conceived collection policy for the music department, but his death in 1949 prevented him from realising his plans. Nonetheless, with minor additions and adjustments, his conception is in operation to this day, having served as a good basis for the documentation of Czech musical culture from the Middle Ages to the present day. In 1937–1938 and in 1944 he was the director of the library at the National Museum, and in 1945–1946 he was the director of the National Museum as a whole.
