The paper presents a survey of animal characters and motives in bohemical production of broadside ballads from 17th to the beginning of 20th century in the National Museum Library in Prague collection. It explores roles and stereotypes of various animal species presented in the texts and follows their evolution in the texts through given period of time. Examples of positive and negative conotations of various animal species from the texts are given along with usage of animal symbolic in describing human characteristics, role of the animals in everyday life as well as their cultural and symbolic value in religious life of the texts‘ recipients.
