The coypu (Myocastor coypus) is a non-indigenous neotropical species bred worldwide as a fur animal both in captivity and in the wild. In our country, the first coypu farms were established in the 1920s. In the course of time, sporadic occurrence of escaped animals was recorded in different regions (early 1970s) and a significant expansion of the coypu distribution has occurred during the last two decades. At present, the coypu forms some tens of permanent wild populations in the lowlands of southern and northern Moravia, as well as in central Bohemia.
