The contribution summarizes the history of recognition of Myotis brandtii (Eversmann, 1845) and changes in its taxonomic status. A revision of the specimens identified by previous authors as Myotis mystacinus brandtii, or Myotis “mystacinus” przewalskii from eastern Macedonia and southern Serbia, respectively, has resulted in their re-identification as M. mystacinus popovi Strelkov, 1983. It has also turned out that M. brandtii in the Balkans was recorded in Bulgaria only. The earliest undoubtful younger synonym of species name M. brandtii, coming from the western part of Europe, is Myotis coluotus Kostroň, 1943, which the previous authors considered a nomen nudum or a synonym of M. mystacinus (Kuhl, 1817). The possibility that the name Brachyotus mystacinus var. aureus Koch, 1865 is a synonym of name M. brandtii, is considered incorrect.
