A total of 43 355 specimens of free-living foxes were examined for the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei between 1981–1996. Altogether, 741 specimens were diagnosed as mangy. The weight, sex, date of catching, localization, type of skin changes and behaviour before catching were evaluated. The sarcoptic mite densities per square centimeter of epidermis were determined. An a brupt increase of infected foxes in autumn months was recorded.
