The article outlines the fates of the wife of the significant researcher and co-founder of the Slavic studies Pavel Josef Šafařík, who – like other educated married women in the 19th century – could only play an accompany-ing role, the role of the woman in the background. The study shows how her private life reflected the situation in the multinational Habsburg Monarchy and what position Evangelists had in it. It pays attention to the con-tacts of Julie Šafaříková with the representatives of the Czech National Revival as well as other Slavic nations and to how the life of her family was affected by the defeat of the 1848 revolution.
