Given the present stage of specific research on Portuguese Humanism, the work on inventories of ancient authors transmitted by Portuguese humanistic activity demands prior elucidation of the humanistic field and its research in Portugal, in order to produce monographs about the specific activity of transmission (edition, commentary and translation). A general Catalog of Humanism in Portugal requires, in the first place, the clarification of an operational definition of the term „humanist“. This definition should be based upon a philological competency and upon certain humanistic topica, which are able to be seen in specific ‘discourse’s indicators, like the ‘aristocracy of letters’, but should not be identified with related doctrinal postulates, such as erasmism. These postulates, however, are widely extended in the current specific bibliography. On the other hand, the concern about a general Catalog allows us to outline a synthetic characterization of the humanistic activity in Portugal.
