The topic of local trade in Carpathian Ruthenia, including various forms of goods distribution, has so far been addressed only to a very limited extent in scientific publications. This paper is the first to comprehensively examine the phenomenon of economic markets in this region in the 1920s and 1930s. Its primary objective is to outline the various contexts of markets for all types of livestock, animal products, and other goods. In terms of information, it is largely based on contemporary reports, primarily those from the periodical Podkarpatské Hlasy [Subcarpathian Voices]. The work starts with the initial background and the role of the state, moves on to an analysis of how the markets operated, and ends with social aspects, the involvement of individual ethnic communities in their functioning, various related problems, and the memories of Czechs (as recollections of representatives of the Czech community). The article also briefly mentions the reflection of the markets in the film, photographic, and literary works of various Czech artists who travelled to the region. The paper also includes contemporary visual examples of the phenomenon of the markets in the form of photographs, drawings, and contemporary reports.
