The paper explores the history of reading societies and public libraries in Opava in the nineteenth century, with particular attention to German reading societies and selected public libraries in the city. Since virtually no archival materials documenting the activities of these societies have been preserved, the article demonstrates the potential of periodical press as a source for reconstructing their historical development.
