In the third edition of his magisterial monograph on Albrecht Dürer (Princeton, NJ, 1948), Erwin Panofsky published and translated a text in which Jan Dubravius, in 1516, described an image of Adam and Eve, then owned by Jan Thurzo, Bishop of Wroclaw. This description gave impetus to a number of art historians either to identify the work in question, or to disparage the authenticity of Dubravius’s report. This paper fi rstly intends to analyze Dubravius’s text for the fi rst time in its entirety, which has not been done by Panofsky and others, and then to identify its sources. In this way, fresh light will be shed upon relations between humanists and works of art at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
