The main subject of this publication is the collecting of items from classical antiquity in the Czech lands, viewed within the framework of cultural and social development in both the Czech lands and Europe from the Middle Ages until the 20th century. This is the first comprehensive publication devoted to this issue. Given the increased interest in the European tradition and the way in which various cultural spheres influenced each other in the history of European and world culture, the subject is a highly topical one. The publication tracen the development of interest in the classical heritage in the Czech lands, with reference to collecting activity and the impact it had on Czech cultural history, in relation to the way in which the ancient world was perceived in the rest of Europe. It is designed not only for specialists, but for a more general readership.
